Special Olympics

Special Olympics Oklahoma is a year-round sports training and competition program for children and adults with mental retardation. Children must be at least 8 years old to compete.

There are 7,900 athletes, 10,000 volunteers and over 700 teams participating in 90 Local, Area, Sectional and State events. In addition, there are more than 30 training schools conducted to train volunteer coaches and games management teams.

Every year in January, Special Olympics hosts it's Winter Games in Norman and each May, Stillwater is host to the 3-day Summer Games competition and celebration. Both the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University are outstanding supporters of Special Olympics.

An exciting program in Special Olympics is our Unified® Sports program which combines athletes with and without mental retardation on teams that compete against other Unified® teams. This program expands sports opportunities for athletes seeking new challenges and dramatically increases inclusion in the community.
